3 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Hire An Unexperienced Accountant

3 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Hire An Unexperienced Accountant 3 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Hire An Unexperienced Accountant

When looking for an accountant, the first thing that most business owners look for is price. Price is important when looking for an accountant but it shouldn't be the only thing on a hiring manager's mind. Hiring an accountant that is going to be handling your financials for the next however many years is a big step and if you hire an unexperienced person to do the job just because you want to save money, you will probably do the exact opposite. An un-experienced accountant probably only went to school for it and has no real life experience.
Do they have a strong understanding of Credits and Debits?
Credits and Debits are by far the most important part of balancing your book or bank statements. Not only do your books have to line up with your bank statements but the credits and debits have to match up in various different areas such as balance sheet and journals. If an accountant were to record the wrong amounts in an area like, service revenue, you could be thinking you have more money coming in than you actually have. A lot of business owners make financial decisions based off the books and the bank statements and if any of these numbers were off, it could mean trouble for the business owner.
Have they worked for a company before or did they just graduate school?
If you are hiring someone fresh out of school you should be careful. School teaches you the ins and outs of accounting but what they don't teach you are real life situations. Yeah, they have some real world situations in the accounting books the students have to study and work through but having a real life situation happen and learning what caused it is the best way for accountants to gain experience in this field. I know everyone has to start somewhere but if your company has been in business for a long time and you don't have time to keep tabs on an employee, don't hire an unexperienced accountant.
Are they familiar with assets and liabilities?
Every good accountant should know that liabilities + owner's equity = assets, but the most important part of each of those areas is your payable and receivable accounts. Accounts payable and accounts receivable are the major areas where accountants have the opportunity to mess up the most. If an accountant were to record a receivable without recording a payable, even just once, it could ruin the books for the remainder of the year. Most companies do their books on December, 31st of each year and if any numbers are off during that year it will make a difference in the ratios that the company needs to make important financial decisions.
Hiring an unexperienced accountant can really mess up your books and financial statements that you need to make important decisions about the business's growth. Save yourself money in the long-run by hiring an experienced accountant that will make sure your books are always right, day in and day out.

Hiring a Tax Preparation Company - 3 Things To Look Out For

Hiring a Tax Preparation Company - 3 Things To Look Out For Hiring a Tax Preparation Company - 3 Things To Look Out For
By Erick B Carlson
Finding a tax preparation company can be tough if you don't know what to look out for. There are so many companies online that it can be hard to filter through all of the results. Most companies will have similar services they offer but you need to be focused on what the companies won't tell you up front. Do they have references, will they give you a free consultation, and do they charge by the hour or per the service?
Do they have references?
Most trustworthy companies will offer references upon request. They won't have them listed on their websites because of security and keeping personalized information safe but they will have customers that have agreed to have them listed as references. If a customer really enjoys the business of a company they are most likely to refer that company to someone else. Also, check your social media sites or put up a poll in yahoo answers to query whether users like a particular service over the other.
Do they offer a free consultation?
Most tax preparation companies will offer a free tax consultation to get you in the door and they will go over the different options you have to get your taxes done. Make sure you have the most important information already ready for them. Sometimes they will be able to give you a general quote right there over the phone or email. If the company doesn't offer a free consultation, don't worry about it, there will be plenty of companies that do. Also, if you want a free consultation that you can do yourself, all you have to do is download the Turbo Tax software and they will let you input all your information and tell you how much you could expect to receive on your income tax without ever paying.
Do they charge by the hour or service?
The only way that charging by the hour works well for some people is if you have a very small return that you are expecting. Otherwise, paying by the service is the best way to go. It insures that you will pay the same amount to the company regardless of the amount of your refund. If you have a lot of information that needs to be documented to do your taxes, don't go with a company that offers services by the hour, you will only waste your money.
Make sure and do adequate research before hiring a random company off of the internet. It's too easy to get scammed these days. Plus, these days, it doesn't take a lot of work to be able to verify the trustworthiness of a company online. A couple Google searches can tell you everything you need to know about a company within 10-20 minutes or so.

3 Tips For Choosing The Right Tax Preparation Service

3 Tips For Choosing The Right Tax Preparation Service
By Erick B Carlson
If you don't choose the right way to get your taxes done, it could end up costing 100's or even 1,000's of dollars. Some places might charge more and some might charge less but you have to decide which one is right for you, regardless of the price. Here are a couple ways you can filter out the different methods and make a decision on which one is right for you.
Hiring a Company
If you are going to hire a company, make sure that they are upfront with you about every cost and that there are no hidden fees that you will be receiving after services are performed. Hiring a company can be a good thing because they have experience and will make sure that you get every tax deduction or break that you are eligible for.
Using Software
Software can be a perfect solution if you like doing the work yourself. Most companies that have tax preparation software, have a do it yourself guide that walks you through the process. Using software is only a good option if you are very computer savvy and know about deductions that you are eligible for. The software will ask a lot of the right questions to get the information it needs to decide what you might qualify for but it is not going to find everything that a company would.
Hiring an Individual
Hiring an individual to prepare your taxes for you can be beneficial because you know they are going to take their time and find every deduction that you might be eligible for and maybe even ones where the area is gray. Some people are actually eligible for more tax breaks than they think. An experienced tax preparation individual will question you to find out if you might be eligible for certain deductions that they know about that the companies or software's wouldn't. Hiring an individual can also be risky because they have no supervisors to watch over them or check their work. Make sure that they have references or sources that you can check to make sure they do respectable work.
Do your research and make sure the method you are picking fits the right type of taxes you are trying to prepare. Some companies might specialize in business tax preparation, while most individuals focus on personal taxes. Choose the right one for you and make sure that they are credible.

Accounting Services - 3 Tips On Finding The Right Accountant

Accounting Services - 3 Tips On Finding The Right Accountant
By Erick B Carlson
Finding the right accountant can be tough with so much fraudulent activity that is going on online these days. It is hard to find a trustworthy accountant, especially while looking online. If you are searching on Google, it can be even harder with the 1,000's of search results that come up when you perform a search for accounting services. Just because someone is in the number one spot does not necessarily mean they will be the perfect accountant for you. There are multiple factors that go into finding an accountant depending on your individual or business needs. Here are a couple ways that you can filter out the results by just doing a little bit of research.
Pricing
The pricing structure of a company might be different from the pricing of someone who works out of their home office. Most companies will have accounting services for individuals or businesses. A lot, of home bases accountants usually focus on individuals but can handle small businesses as well. You will save more money if you can find a trustworthy accountant that is working from their home office. The only downfall of hiring someone that works from home is that they have no supervisor. They are in charge of your account and no one else will be able to check if they are working ethically. The great thing about hiring a company is that you can have the security that they are going to do a great job and there work will be checked over by a supervisor.
Experience
Hiring an inexperienced accountant can be a real nightmare when tax season comes around. If your books are off, it might be tougher to prepare your taxes and could end up in the whole or losing money. Make sure the person or company you choose to hire has at least 10 years of experience. 10 years in business, shows a lot about a company or business owner and that they are in it for the long run.
References
Does this company or individual have references? If so, check them. You want to make sure that the person or company you are dealing with is reputable and that they aren't just trying to get your money. If they have more than one reference, I would suggest checking them all. It's too easy these days to get a friend of yours to answer the phone for you and act like a potential client. Maybe, do a couple reputation searches online or check the BBB website as well.
Don't just hire any accountant, make sure you do your research and find the best one for your business size and one that has a healthy reputation in the industry. Price should be last on your list if you are looking for a trustworthy person to handle your money.

3 Reasons Why Having An Accountant Is An Absolute Must

3 Reasons Why Having An Accountant Is An Absolute Must
By Erick B Carlson
Some business owners would like to save money by having their front desk attendant or some hourly wage employee do their accounting services for them. Most of the time, this is a bad idea. There are a lot of things that you could not possibly teach an hourly employee unless they took the time and took an accounting class. That's why accountants go to school for accounting, it's not that easy.
Debits and Credits
It seems like the idea of debits and credits is easy enough but when it starts getting into balance sheets and all of the different journals you have to fill out, that's when things start to get tricky. Even some of the best accountants will miss a number here and there. It doesn't sound like being one number off can really make a difference but that's where you be wrong. Almost every principle in accounting relies off another one. Meaning that if one number is off, every number will be off. Imagine ordering supplies or inventory and the amounts that you thought you needed are completely wrong. You either end up with too much or not enough in the worst case.
Clear Headed Decision Making
IF you are making business decisions on what to do with your money or plan on making a withdrawal from the business account, you better make sure that your numbers are right or you might be putting yourself in the whole. Knowing where you money is at all time is almost detrimental in making decisions on where your money is going next. An accountant would know what the books are looking like at all times and would even be able to make future predictions based on these numbers. They would be able to tell you if you are making a good business decision or not.
Save Time
It doesn't seem like it would take very long to do your accounting but in all actuality it is a full time job. Some companies will hire an inside specialist to do the work but most companies outsource. You can hire a company online that will manage your entire business and they make it easy to upload receipts, bills, and other forms of payment receipts. This will save you time and money because you are not paying someone when they are not working. If you have an inside accountant there will be time when they are not working and you are still paying them. Save yourself the money and outsource.
You should definitely hire a professional accountant that has a degree in accounting or outsource to a reputable company. Don't overload your front desk attendant with work that they are not qualified for and don't hire a $10.00 dollar an hour employee that claims they are good at math. Accounting deals with much more than just math. Spend the extra couple bucks and hire experience.

Why You Should Get Your Taxes Done By A Professional

Why You Should Get Your Taxes Done By A Professional
By Erick B Carlson

So many people are going with online software or websites that allow you to do your taxes on your own. These services are easy to use and do a good job for what they offer, but the real question is, are you getting the most out of your income tax or do you even know what you qualify for? You're almost going in blind unless you know all about deductions and things you might qualify for. I put this guide together to show you what you are missing by not going with a professional.

More Deductions

It's a stone cold fact that a professional will be able to look at your profile and tell you what kind of extra deductions you might qualify for. There are race specific, work related, and travel deductions that a lot of people overlook when they are using software. The software isn't a human being and can't recall previous experiences where someone got a deduction because of this or that. It can only gauge what you will receive by what you input only. A professional will ask the kinds of questions software could never be taught to ask.

Customer Service

You have a team that is totally dedicated to you. It's nice to have someone you can call and ask questions. Learning what is going on in the tax preparation process will help you understand what kinds of tax breaks that you qualify for, so that in the future you might be able to do your own taxes and still get a great refund. Plus, you will be able to sit back and relax, knowing that your taxes are being done by a professional that will take care of everything.

Audits

The last thing you want to do is use one of them software's to do your taxes and the next thing you know, the IRS is coming at you with an audit. An audit can be a scary thing if you have never experienced one. Even people that have, most likely would never like to experience on again. Most tax preparation companies have an audit protection service that puts them in the driver's seat if an audit is ever to occur. The process will be entirely handled by their support team and they will report back to you. Some of the software comes with audit protection too but it's kind of scary ordering anything offline these days.

Hiring a professional takes away all the risk and chances of mistakes that you could make if you were to prepare your taxes yourself. I know it's cheaper to go the software route but the amount of money you could get back on your taxes by using a professional should cover the difference.
